6 Ways to Turn Your Home Into a Sanctuary This Autumn

Now that summer is over, the darker nights, cloudier skies, and cooler weather can easily feel draining and taxing on your wellbeing. Reframing how we view Autumn helps ease the transition into the new season, using it as an opportunity to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with ourselves.

Adesola Glass Tealight Holder Lamp - Nkuku

During Autumn, our feeds and favourite stores are often inundated with gimmick decor: pumpkin mugs, artificial pumpkin spice scents, and novelties that only last a few weeks. Homeware shouldn't be a seasonal costume. It's about collecting meaningful pieces that transition effortlessly with you, whether that’s wrapping up in a rich velvet throw on a cool summer evening or using your favourite candle holders year-round.

Creating a home sanctuary this Autumn goes far beyond buying new decor. It's about stepping into a slower mindset, leaning into simple daily rituals, and filling your space with a warm, cosy ambience. Here are six of our favourite ways to turn your home into a true Autumnal retreat.

1. Daily Rituals

Karuma Ceramic Mug (Set of 2) - Nkuku

Throughout Autumn I like to keep my cupboard stacked full with delicious teas, cacao, matcha, and freshly roasted coffee beans. These form part of my daily ritual while I journal about my intentions for the day, or reflect on how the day went. Using a quality mug in a design that I love really helps set the tone. People set resolutions in January, but now is the best time to do it.

2. Aromatherapy

Atina Fresh Olive & Lemon Candle - MÆGEN

Autumnal scents are my favourite, while lavender is an all-year-round classic. Our MÆGEN Atina Fresh Olive & Lemon candle may seem like a summer scent, but it’s perfect for awakening the senses and incorporating something a bit more vibrant when the day is feeling gloomy. I also love to use a diffuser, candle holders with beautiful scented candles, incense, or an oil burner. Always ensure that the candles, incense, and oils used are good quality and non-toxic!

3. Create a Cosy & Comforting BedroomHamade Chestnut Bedside Table, Medium - Bokel Home

The ultimate sanctuary in your home. If you focus on just one room, let it be this one. My non-negotiables? Cosy bedding to sink into, a soft hooded cotton robe, fluffy slippers, a velvet throw for extra warmth, and an electric blanket so the bed is pre-warmed before getting into it. The Lumie Alarm Clock is perfect for setting the right level of brightness at bedtime, and I love unwinding to the sunset, or waking to the sunrise.

4. Layer Your Decor

Oorja Brass Tray - Nkuku

Layering your home with decor in Autumn helps a room feel less flat when there is less natural light. Try incorporating multiple lamps and lighting sources, beautiful mirrors to reflect light, textured glassware, and warm, antique aged brass accents.

5. Comforting Food

During the autumn months, I love to keep my dinners lighter with homemade chicken soup, stews, and casseroles. Splurge on indulgent snacks: good quality dark chocolate, dates, orange chocolate coated almonds, olive oil crisps, or freshly baked sourdough bread paired with almond butter and local honey. The home is not going to feel like a sanctuary if your tummy is rumbling while trying to watch a film.

6. Soundscapes, Meditations & Breathwork

Transform your space into a sanctuary with a soothing soundscape, guided meditation, or breathwork sessions. Perfect for unwinding or drifting off at night. Teamed with magnesium glycerinate, it’s the ultimate recipe for a deep, restorative sleep. A must during the start of the Autumn months while our body adapts to a colder, darker season.
