Custom Solid Wood Furniture: What Can You Change?

Scrolling through interiors on Pinterest, it's easy to feel that every awkward corner needs fitted cabinetry and every alcove needs a joiner. Meanwhile, the piece you actually like is just a few centimetres too wide, or comes in a finish that doesn't quite work with the rest of the room.

You don't always need to start again. Sometimes the answer is to take a design you already love and change the detail that's getting in the way. A shallower console, a taller bedside table, different feet or a painted finish can make furniture feel much more at home in your space.

Bokel Home offers custom solid-wood furniture, including adaptations of existing designs and pieces designed from scratch. Options can include dimensions, storage, stains, hand-painted finishes, legs and hardware, with feasibility confirmed for each project.

Here are the changes worth thinking about, and how to work out what will make a difference in your home.

This Louis desk was made in custom dimensions to suit the customer's space, keeping the French Grey finish and turned-leg detailing of the original design

1. Make it fit the way you live

Before deciding on dimensions, think about what isn't working. Is the hallway too narrow to walk through comfortably with shopping bags? Are you reaching down from a high mattress for your morning coffee? Have you found a lovely desk, but your chair won't tuck underneath?

These are much more useful starting points than simply asking for something smaller. You might need less depth without losing width, or more height without adding extra storage.

Try marking out the proposed size with tape that's safe for your flooring. Pull out your chair, check there's room to open the drawers, or walk past with a basket of laundry. You'll soon get a feel for whether the piece fits comfortably into everyday life, rather than simply fitting the gap.

This custom version of our Hamade Chest of 6 Drawers was adapted to include nine drawers, keeping the chestnut finish and familiar Hamade detailing while creating a different storage layout.

2. Be intentional with storage

Think about what you'll actually keep in the piece and how often you'll reach for it. More drawers aren't always the answer. Sometimes an open shelf for your current book or a drawer that fits your laptop is more useful than several smaller compartments.

For a bedside table, you might want glasses and hand cream tucked away, with somewhere to charge your phone nearby. At a desk, it could be a place for stationery and notebooks, leaving the tabletop free for whatever you're working on.

Practical details can make just as much difference as extra storage. An integrated power socket or USB charging point could give you somewhere convenient to plug in a lamp or charge a device without reaching behind the furniture. Mention these ideas when discussing your design so we can confirm what's possible.

If something specific needs to fit inside, send us its measurements, including any plugs or connectors. That way, we can discuss storage around how you'll use it, rather than simply adding drawers and hoping everything finds a home.

3. Make the finish your own

You might love the shape of a piece but want a different stain, a painted finish or a combination of the two. Customising the finish lets you bring it into your own scheme, rather than choosing the closest available colour and trying to make it work.

We can discuss hand-painting the whole piece, using different colours on different sections, or mixing painted details with stained wood. Think painted drawer fronts with a natural wood top, contrasting legs, or one colour throughout for a more understated look.

Take your lead from the room. A colour picked up from your wallpaper, curtains or a favourite piece of artwork can help the furniture feel connected without making everything match.

And don't rule out dark finishes just because the room is small. Rich wood against deep walls and soft lighting can feel wonderfully cocooning. Against pale walls, the same piece becomes more of a feature. It depends on the atmosphere you want to create.

Share your ideas with us so we can discuss the options for your chosen design. Where corresponding samples are available, order free finish samples and swatches and look at them alongside your flooring and paint, during the day and with your lamps on in the evening.

This custom version of our medium Nordell was hand-painted in white instead of the original natural wood stain, giving the design a softer look to suit the customer's room.

4. Don't overlook the feet and handles

You can love the shape of a piece without wanting every detail exactly as it comes. Legs, feet, and handles can change its character, bringing it closer to your home's style without starting again.

Turned legs lend a more traditional feel, bun feet can give a piece a grounded, luxe look, while tapered legs suit a lighter, Scandinavian-inspired scheme. Think about which details you're drawn to in the furniture you already own, rather than feeling everything needs to come from the same collection.

Hardware is another opportunity to make it your own. Different handles can change the feel of drawer fronts, while a repeated metal finish can connect the piece to lighting or other details around the room.

You can browse hardware and leg styles on our Custom Design page. Share the options you like, and we can discuss what works for your chosen piece.

5. Keep the details you fell for

Customising furniture doesn't mean changing everything. If you love the curved shape, turned legs or simple drawer fronts, keep those as your starting point.

It can be tempting to combine every idea you've saved into one piece. Instead, decide what matters most. Perhaps the proportions need adjusting, but the original finish and detailing are already right.

Changing one measurement also affects other things. A shallower console has less room on top and inside. A narrower desk may need a different drawer arrangement. Talk through those compromises rather than assuming the original design will work exactly the same way at a different size.

6. Bring in different materials and textures

Mango wood is the starting point for many of our designs, bringing natural grain, warmth and variation to a piece. You can let that character take the lead, or discuss combining it with other materials for a different look.

A marble top could add contrast to a wood cabinet, while cane or rattan panels could break up a solid front. Textured wood detailing can bring depth without adding another material, particularly if you prefer to keep the colour scheme simple.

Think about the room as a whole. If you already have several smooth wood pieces, a different texture can add interest without everything competing for attention. You don't need to combine every material you like; one considered detail can be enough.

Share your ideas with us so we can discuss which combinations are possible for your design, along with their construction, care and suitability for everyday use.

7. Send us the awkward bits

You don't need a polished moodboard or a finished technical drawing to start a conversation. A link to the Bokel piece you like, a few photographs, and an explanation of what you want to change make for a useful beginning.

Show us the skirting boards, the socket behind the desk and the door that opens beside the alcove. Include the maximum width, depth and height you can accommodate, along with anything specific that needs to fit inside or underneath.

If you have an idea for a different finish or detail, share that too. You don't need every answer before getting in touch. The point is to work out which changes will make the piece useful to you, rather than add another project to your list.

8. Check the practical details before committing

Once the design is agreed, confirm the final dimensions, materials, finish, storage and hardware, along with the price, lead time and assembly or installation requirements. If fitting a particular item matters, make sure the relevant internal measurements are included.

Measure the route into your home as well. The perfect fit for an alcove still needs to make it around the stairs.

If you're planning furniture around a radiator or another heat source, discuss suitability separately. Making a piece the right size doesn't automatically make it suitable for that position.

9. Start with an idea of your own

You don't have to start with an existing Bokel design, or even a furniture category you've seen on our website. If you've been searching for a drinks cabinet, a wardrobe or something else you can't find in our collection, we can discuss creating a piece from scratch.

Think about what would make it useful to you. A drinks cabinet might need room for your favourite glasses and taller bottles, while a wardrobe could combine hanging space with drawers. These details give the design a purpose beyond simply filling a gap.

Send us a sketch, measurements or reference images through our Custom Design page. You don't need a polished drawing or every detail worked out. Tell us what you like, what you need the piece to do and where it will live, and we can discuss what's possible.

This custom version reimagines our wide Lillian sideboard as a taller, two-door cabinet, keeping the geometric carved detailing and chestnut finish. Bun feet replace the original tapered legs, giving the piece a more grounded look.

A home that feels like yours

You don't need to have every room figured out at once. Sometimes a standard piece works perfectly; sometimes one small adjustment makes all the difference.

The aim isn't to make your home look as though everything was designed and installed on the same day. It's to choose furniture you enjoy living with, in proportions and finishes that work for you.
